Privately owned e-scooters are illegal to use in public for a reason. They can be dangerous, even in the control of experienced adults. They are not suitable to be used by children, whose understanding of risk is still developing and who are not familiar with the rules of the road.
According to the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS), there have been 49 deaths from e-scooter accidents (as of May 2025). In 2023, there were 1,292 collisions with 1,387 casualties.
The main types of injuries caused by e-scooter accidents are head injuries, fractures and soft tissue injuries.
