What Happened to Jacob?

A split-second decision that cost him his life.

At 3:41pm on Wednesday 19th March 2025, Jacob Calland left his home in Wythenshawe, Manchester. He met up with another boy and made a split second decision to ride as a passenger on the back of the boy’s e-scooter. Neither of them were wearing a helmet or any other safety equipment.

At 3:59pm, the e-scooter they were riding on collided with a car. Jacob went flying onto the other side of the road where he landed in front of oncoming traffic. The force of the impact was so strong that Jacob’s trainers came off.  Jacob suffered a catastrophic head injury. He received life saving treatment from emergency services before being rushed to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

At 4:35pm, Jacob’s mum, Carly, received a call from her partner to say that Jacob had been involved in an accident. Jacob wasn’t carrying any ID with him so emergency services didn’t know who Jacob was or who to contact. Carly rushed frantically made her way to be with her son. When she arrived at the hospital, Jacob was known only as “Golf 66”.

Jacob was placed into a coma and was put into the intensive care unit. He underwent multiple surgeries on his head to try to control the bleeding and swelling on his brain.

On Sunday 23rd March 2025, Jacob suffered a cardiac arrest. He had to be resuscitated for approximately 20 minutes and survived. Jacob had contracted sepsis.

On Wednesday 26th March 2025, Jacob's began to deteriorate. His neurosurgeon told Carly there was nothing further that could be done to save Jacob as he had bleeds and swelling all over his brain. Carly rang loved ones to come and visit Jacob to say their goodbyes. Carly and the nurse took a handprint of Jacob for Carly to keep.

After everyone had left, the nurse pulled Jacob across in his bed so Carly could get inside. She fell asleep whilst holding him.

Jacob died at 5:18am on the morning of Thursday 27th March 2025. He was aged just 14 years and 9 months old. He left behind his 7 year old brother, Jaxley.
