We believe there need to be urgent changes made to the law around the sale and use of private e-scooters, in order save lives. We ask that the government:
At the moment, anyone of any age can buy an e-scooter and they are widely available online and in stores. Children cannot drive a car so they should not be driving any other sort of powered vehicle.
An e-scooter is a powered transporter and should require a licence to own and use, just like a car.
Just like any other motor vehicle, e-scooter owners should have insurance to protect themselves and other road users in case of accidents.
When we get in a car, we are required to wear a seatbelt. The requirement for safety equipment should be no different when getting onto an e-scooter.
Passengers on the back of an e-scooter are particularly vulnerable in an accident, just as Jacob was. E-scooters should only be ridden by one person.
Despite it being illegal to use a privately owned e-scooter in public, many children and adults openly flout the law, putting their own lives and lives of others at risk. The police need to enforce the law. Parents should be punished for allowing their child to have an e-scooter and knowingly allowing them to use one illegally.
Many people have no idea that it is illegal to use a privately owned e-scooter in public. There needs to be an awareness campaign, particularly amongst children and parents.
